Pastor Weekly - 9/9/26
Hello ICC Family!
Laurel and I had the opportunity to catch up with several old friends this past week. A British friend that was part of our church in Thailand stayed with us a few days with her sister. She is still a part of the church I pastored for several years, so it was great to reminisce and hear how the Lord has been working in the lives of people there. Then on Labor Day we had a mini reunion with three other couples that also used to minister in East Asia. We had amazing food together and greatly enjoyed telling old stories and hearing new ones.
Catching up is something we intentionally do with our friends and family. We make appointments for coffee, plan get-togethers, and even take trips to catch up with those we love. On the other hand, it’s not a good sign when we get so busy in our day-to-day lives that we feel like we need to catch up with our spouse or our children. If we have to book an appointment to make time to feel like we know what is going on with our own husband or wife… that might be a clue that we need to examine our priorities. And then if it ever gets to the point that we need to schedule time with the Lord, feeling that we need to catch up with him… well, we have really got off track somewhere.
Because that means that we have forgotten who God is. Or at least what He is like. He doesn’t need to catch up with you, because He has never been away! He knows everything about you. He sees everything. Even your heart. Reality is that you might feel like you need to catch up with God, but He has always been there ready to listen and talk with you. I hope that brings you great comfort. The Lord loves you and will be as much a part of your life as you let him!
At the same time, there is a warning here for us as well. If we have drifted from the Lord so far that we feel like we need to catch up with him…, that means we are allowing other things to be most important in our life. And that is sin. Scripture makes it clear that there is one thing with which we do not really want to catch up with, but that always, inevitably will catch up with us. That is our sin.
But if you don’t do this, you will certainly sin against the Lord;
be sure your sin will catch up with you.
Numbers 32:23
The context of that verse matches perfectly our Scripture text last Sunday. Because it was told by Moses to the two and a half eastern tribes of Israel to ensure that they would keep their vows to help conquer all of Canaan. It was to remind them of their promise to fight. And that is exactly what we talked about on Sunday… how we have to fight the battle for our own hearts - the battle to love and obey the Lord and every one of his commands. Let’s not allow the enemy to blind us to reality. Nothing escapes God’s knowledge and our sin will surely catch up with each of us. So, let’s walk with the Lord daily, asking him to help us see his blessings and love, and forgive us of our sins. Let’s stay caught up with him always!
We had a great start to our new discipleship series last week, studying with John Macarthur the great parable of The Prodigal Son. Join us this evening and I’m sure you will not be disappointed. This Sunday we will wrap up our sermon series in Joshua. The following Sundays we will hear from Brother Jeremy and then have a praise and testimony service leading up to our Church Anniversary Sunday on October 4th.
