Pastor Weekly - 8/26/26
Hello ICC Family!
When we moved to Goose Creek over three years ago, Laurel and I had a lot of fun setting up our new house. After living overseas for almost 25 years, we had to buy quite a lot of stuff! We weren’t able to ship hardly any of our furniture back to the U.S. from Thailand. Our funds were somewhat limited as well, so we had to go on the hunt for bargains. We made a lot of Facebook Marketplace purchases. That said, one thing that we had talked about spending good money on was a mattress. We had slept the previous 10 years on a fairly cheap Ikea mattress, and we knew we needed to upgrade. And yet… when it came time to make a purchase, it was difficult to pull the trigger and spend a ton of money on just that one item. So… despite what you read in every article about not skimping on a mattress, despite the advice of every person you have ever talked with to not buy a cheap mattress, despite our painful personal experience in buying a cheap mattress, and despite the fact that we had planned to spend big money on a nice mattress when we moved back to the States… we bought a cheap mattress.
Well, a few weeks ago we admitted defeat and finally invested in a nice one. The one we should have bought over three years ago. We knew better. We just didn’t want to spend the money. We thought we could get by. It turns out we couldn’t.
I have been thinking about how that is way too often how we approach our time with the Lord. We know that we should spend time with Him. We know it will be good for us. We know what Scripture commands, as well as the stories we have in the Bible. We know about not burying our talents (our money, gifts, time, etc.) in the ground. We have been taught by numerous godly people about reading our Bible and praying and spending time with the Lord. We have seen the benefits in our own personal lives when we are obedient and walking with Jesus. And yet we don’t… We think we can get by with the bare minimum - I will go to church when I can, but that is enough time with God. We know better.
Let’s not settle for the cheap mattress when it comes to our spiritual lives, church! Spend the time with the Lord each and every day. You will never regret it! Every moment you invest will bring back a blessing that will last for eternity.
Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
