Hello ICC Family!
In 1912, the year that the Titanic sank, it took 4-5 days for a person to cross the Atlantic Ocean. If you wanted to travel from Charleston to Zurich, Switzerland, you would have had to first take a train up to New York, then take that transatlantic voyage, and then multiple trains to Zurich, with several overnights along the way. It would have taken a person 10-12 days at minimum. Yesterday, my wife made that trip in 14 hours, with 5 of those hours including sitting and remotely working in the Atlanta airport.
Communication was a little faster. By 1912, you could send a telegraph to Zurich at a speed of about 20 words per minute. However, those 20 words would have cost you the equivalent of about $35. Most people wouldn’t have spent the money on that. The alternative, of course, would have been to mail a letter for $1.72, which would have travelled in the same way as a person, so it would have taken 10-12 days to get there. Yesterday, Laurel discovered there was free Wi-Fi on the plane, so we texted back and forth while she flew over the Atlantic Ocean until I went to bed. And that didn’t cost a thing!
Technology and innovation are amazing! The idea of being able to communicate with a person as they are thousands of miles away should make us shake our heads in wonder every single day. Yes, it requires a cell phone, and either Wi-Fi or data, and the other person needs those things as well…, but still! And so most people take advantage of this, multiple, even dozens of times each day.
The question I have been pondering, though, then is why in the world do we not pray just as often, or even more? The God of the universe has invited us to communicate with him instantly any time we want to or need to. And it doesn’t cost a thing. We talk about and sing about how much we love him. We profess our faith and trust in him. We confess that He is in control - of all things and all events. If we truly believe that He hears us and listens to us and loves us, and invites us to talk with him at any time…why do we not talk to him more?
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Matthew 7:7-8
What a promise this is! Stop right now and lift up the first thing that the Lord brings to your heart! And then continue to speak to him and listen to him each moment throughout the day.
Tonight we continue our discipleship study on spiritual gifts. It will be a lot of fun and very helpful, so please come and join us. Friday night we have our summer movie night. Come with your snacks and drinks and come ready to be inspired. Then our next big fellowship Sunday is International Sunday at ICC which will be on August 9th followed by what we are going to call the Global Feast! Put that on your calendars now!
Blessings to you all!
And know that I am praying for you!
